Alto clef works well for the viola’s range: it avoids using too many ledger lines, which helps to read and process the music faster. The lowest note on the viola is C3 (one octave lower than middle C), which is written just below one ledger line beneath the staff.
In the alto clef, the middle line of the staff is middle C. This C is the third finger on the G string, right around the middle of the viola’s 1st position range. If you’ve learned any different clefs before, you might’ve been taught an acronym to remember the five lines and four spaces.
Here is a viola fingering chart for you to download (free) with the notes in first position on each string and relative fingers. You can also see the notes written on the staff. There are the keys with up to three sharps (C, G, D, A) and up to four flats (F, Bb, Eb, Ab).

For example, there are numerous editions of Bach's Cello Suites transcribed for viola. [16]
The viola is the middle voice of the string family, sitting comfortably between the violin and cello. More specifically the viola’s range is a perfect fifth below the violin’s, having the same A, D, and G strings as the violin with the addition of a C string (an octave below middle C).
For Viola, staff notation is actually organized around something known as the Alto staff. This contains a stave (the name for the lines) of 5 lines and 4 spaces. The staff is labelled using an alto clef (the thing at the beginning of the line that looks like a capital B)! Viola is very special, as it’s one of the only instruments that use ...
