[5]Virginia City developed as a boomtown with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major silver deposit discovery in the United States, with numerous mines opening.
The Virginia City Scenic drive is a twenty mile long paved route that runs between Reno and US Highway 50. Along the way, the route passes through the historic town of Virginia City and climbs over a small mountain range that provides excellent views of Reno, the Washoe Valley and the Sierras.
