Evolution of the Virginia Colony, 1611-1624. Almost from the start, investors in the Virginia Company in England were unhappy with the accomplishments of their Jamestown colonists. They therefore sought a new charter, which the king granted in May 1609.
The Colony of Virginia was a British colonial settlement in North America between 1606 and 1776. The first effort to create an English settlement in the area was chartered in 1584 and established in 1585; the resulting Roanoke Colony lasted for three attempts totaling six years. In 1590, the colony was abandoned.
Colonial Virginia: A History (1986) by Warren M Billings, John E. Selby, Thad W. Tate covers both Early Colonial and Late Colonial periods, with an afterward assessment of the Revolution. While overall a political history, attention is also paid to Indians, women, servants, yeomen and slaves.
