Although only accessible by boat from a downtown dock on the Miami River, “Virginia Beach, a Dade County Park for the exclusive use of Negroes,” was opened on August 1, 1945. Virginia Key Beach quickly became a cherished getaway, social gathering place, and even a sacred site for religious services.
Timeline. 1945 – 2000. 1945 (August) Virginia Key Beach Park opened as Miami-Dade County’s “Colored Only” beach. 1947 Rickenbacker Causeway is built connecting mainland Miami with Virginia Key and Key Biscayne. 1979 Dade County gives the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park property to the City of Miami.
Virginia Key Beach Park is an environmental and historic landmark located on a barrier island. Its earliest recorded history is of an 1838 skirmish during the Second Seminole War in which three Seminoles were killed on this site.
Virginia Key Beach was just one municipal park out of 28 in Miami-Dade County at the time and the only park open to Black residents. It was only accessible by ferry or private boat until the opening of the Rickenbacker Causeway in 1947.
Virginia Key is part of a chain of natural barrier islands that extend from Miami to Key West along the Florida coast. Once part of Miami Beach, Virginia Key became a distinct island after a hurricane in the 1830s.
19 Φεβ 2021 · With no legal options for swimming and public recreation, Blacks looked south to a small barrier island called Virginia Key. The two-mile stretch of white sandy beach was only accessible by boat, but that mattered little. Nicknamed Bear’s Cut, it quickly became Miami’s de facto “colored only” beach.
