Protein gel electrophoresis is a laboratory technique that separates proteins by mass. This technique is similar to running an agarose gel to separate and visualize different molecules of DNA.

In the 1970s, the powerful tool of DNA gel electrophoresis was developed. This process uses electricity to separate DNA fragments by size as they migrate through a gel matrix.
