4 Αυγ 2020 · Adults older than age 70 need 800 IU of vitamin D per day (2). More specific recommendations on how much vitamin D an individual needs is based on blood work. A vitamin D blood serum concentration tells us how much vitamin D in present in the blood at the time it is tested.
In the vast majority of older people, taking vitamin D 800 IU as a supplement every day has a low risk of side effects. Research suggests that taking vitamin D 800-1000 IU/day will prevent low vitamin D levels in most older adults. Other expert groups have provided similar vitamin D guidance.
To reach a 25OHD level of 20ng/ml (50nmol/l) the Institute of Medicine (IOM) set the RDA for vitamin D at 800 IU for people over age 70 years and 600 IU for ages 50–70 years.
Most vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency are: Seniors in general and especially those living in nursing homes or institutionalized care; Individuals living in northern latitudes with minimal sunshine exposure; Individuals who have a disease that reduces vitamin D uptake from the intestine (i.e. inflammatory bowel disease)
How Much Vitamin D is Needed? According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D varies by age but is the same for both men and women. Vitamin D Recommended Daily Allowances: · Ages 0 - 12 months: 400 IU. · Ages 1 - 70 years: 600 IU. · Ages 70+ years: 800 IU.
Many experts suggest that ≥1000–2000 IU [25–50μg] of vitamin D daily is necessary for older people, especially when independence is lost, or hypovitaminosis D could add to the clinical problem [s]. Much higher doses than these are needed for treatment of established deficiency or insufficiency.
