Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin involved in the regula7on of calcium homeostasis and bone health. It is synthesized in the body when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. There are few foods that naturally contain vitamin D or are for7fied with it.

Vitamin D is a nutrient you need for good health. It helps your body absorb calcium, one of the main building blocks for strong bones. Together with calcium, vitamin D helps protect you from developing osteoporosis, a disease that thins and weakens the bones and makes them more likely to break.
This guideline was developed for people who are healthy and without serious health problems. The main goal of this guideline was to see if taking vitamin D pills or getting tested could stop different diseases from happening.
This guideline covers the assessment and treatment of adults with vitamin D deficiency. It does not include pregnant women, children or patients with renal failure (<30ml eGFR. Seek specialist advice where appropriate).
