30 Οκτ 2023 · The vocal folds, also known as the vocal cords / chords, are flaps of tissue located in the larynx. They give us the ability to produce sound (phonation). There are two folds, one on either side of the laryngeal cavity. Each fold is comprised of a vocal ligament, a vocalis muscle and a covering mucous membrane.

They consist of the vestibular ligament (free lower edge of the quadrangular membrane) covered by a mucous membrane, and are pink in colour. They are fixed folds, which act to provide protection to the larynx.

The vocal ligament begins to be present in children at about four years of age. Two layers appear in the lamina propria between the ages of six and twelve, and the mature lamina propria, with the superficial, intermediate and deep layers, is only present by the conclusion of adolescence.

During breathing, the larynx maintains a widely open air channel with abducted VF to control inspiratory and expiratory airflow.
30 Οκτ 2023 · The vocal apparatus of the larynx is called the glottis and consists of two vocal folds (true vocal cords) and the rima glottidis. Each mucous membrane-covered vocal fold contains a vocal ligament that extends from the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage to the vocal process of the corresponding arytenoid cartilage.
The vocal ligament is the tension-bearing element in the vocal folds at high pitches. It has traditionally been treated as a vibrating string, with only length and longitudinal stress governing its normal mode frequencies.
