Long answer is, sleep is essentially a form of shutdown, that keeps the system state in memory (that's why battery still goes down, maintaining RAM takes power) while everything else is powered off. Must be on. Turn brightness all the way down and turn on night mode. Plug it in and download away.

Yeah, they won't work in game mode unfortunately, all you have to do is go to desktop mode and go to the nexus mods website, sign in, download desired mod and put it into the correct location as you would with any other mod.
If you go in Desktop mode than you just open Steam there and download what you want (just as you do on a PC) than the Steam Deck can go in Standby and continues downloading. Look into System settings on Desktop mode into Energy Management to set up the standby mode.
