Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 1 (VQ-1) is an aviation unit of the United States Navy established on 1 June 1955. Its role is aerial reconnaissance and signals intelligence. The squadron is nicknamed the "World Watchers" and is based at NAS Whidbey Island, flying Lockheed EP-3E Aries II aircraft.
The Genesis of VQ-1, Detachment “Bravo” DaNang, Republic of Vietnam. In July 1964 I was on an EC-121M flight crew that was temporarily staging out of Don Muang International Airport, Bangkok, Thailand. The plane commander was LCDR Norm Bull.
Crews deploy to det sites for approximately two months, often traveling to Okinawa, Diego Garcia, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand, Spain and other places around the world. In 1988, VQ-1 retired its last EA-3B Skywarrior—a carrierbased, seven-seat jet affectionately known as the "Whale"—and became a land-based squadron.
