According to the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame, Crawford led Wahoo High School to state football championships in 1896 and 1897. He worked as a shoeshine boy at the Gregory & Jensen Barbershop in Wahoo before winning the state baseball championship for West Point in 1898.
As a high school star, Crawford led Wahoo to two state football championships in 1896 and 1897 and was also noted for foot racing wherever he played. Crawford showed a prodigiousness for baseball at an early age and he left his home at 17 to play in the minor leagues, taking his hometown with him as a nickname, “Wahoo Sam” Crawford.
The Saunders County Historical Society and Museum in Wahoo, Nebraska has been operating since 1963. Its mission is "to collect and preserve objects (artifacts) and information which illustrate the history of Saunders County, Nebraska and its people.
Permanent exhibits include: the Five Famous Sons of Wahoo, Carl “Titanic” Johnson, Luther/JFK College, Nebraska Ordinance Plant, Country Schools, Native Americans, and various businesses of Saunders County.
