On Monday, March 17, 1969, a group of African American employees at the Medical College Hospital for the State of South Carolina in Charleston occupied hospital president William McCord’s office. They sang civil rights protest songs, chanted, and even answered his telephone.
In Charleston in 1969 issues of race, class, and gender coalesced in a strike of more than four hundred African American hospital workers, mostly female, against the all-white administrations of the Medical College Hospital (MCH) and Charleston County Hospital (CCH).
11 Ιουν 2019 · Underpaid and overworked, hundreds, mostly women, took their grievances to the streets of Charleston. They demanded better treatment, the rehiring of 12 co-workers fired by the Medical College Hospital, now the Medical University of South Carolina, and the recognition of the Local 1199B union.
By November of 1968, the union dispatched full-time organizers to Charleston and established Local 1199B as their affiliate. In a state where white supremacy ran even deeper than anti-union sentiment, this promised to be a long fight.
