Walter Hunt. British 1861 - 1941. Walter Hunt was an animal painter. He was the son of Charles Hunt and probably the brother of Edgar Hunt. All three were animal painters and they all lived in Warwickshire.
Walter Hunt was born into a family of painters. His father, Charles, was a genre artist (a painter of everyday scenes) and his brother Edgar was well-known for his paintings of animals. So, too, was Walter Hunt an animal painter, best known for his paintings of farmyard scenes.
Not only was Hunt acknowledged for his pastoral scenes but he was also lauded for his dog pictures, particularly his collies. Motherless--The Shepherds Pet , was well received when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy both for its sentimental subject of a collie tenderly attanding to a stray lamb, and also for the depiction of the collie alone.
Walter Hunt painted farmyard scenes in a style similar to Edgar, especially barn interiors with donkeys and calves, but he went further afield for his subjects and included sporting scenes in his oeuvre.
