Ward's Yew is a dwarf conifer which is primarily valued in the garden for its broadly spreading habit of growth. It has dark green evergreen foliage which emerges light green in spring. The ferny sprays of foliage remain dark green throughout the winter.
A versatile evergreen tolerating heavy pruning, making it ideal for hedges, screens, foundation plantings and topiary landscapes. It can also be left unpruned for a softer textured landscape. Protection (burlap wrap) from drying winter winds is recommended in an exposed location.
Ward's yew is a hybrid of Japanese and English yew that is not native to Minnesota. Problems: No known serious insect or disease problems. Susceptible to winter burn, particularly in exposed sites. Twig blight and needle blight are occasional problems. Root rot may occur in poorly-drained soils. Insect pests include weevils, mealybugs, and scale.
