After driving the treacherous Brokenstar out of ShadowClan, he is given the warrior name Fireheart. Along with his best friend Graystripe, Fireheart guides WindClan back home, and helps RiverClan when their territory floods.
Fireheart is a ThunderClan warrior cat now, but danger still lurks in the forest - and possibly closer than he thinks. With the chill of winter setting in, the cats of rival RiverClan are growing restless, while WindClan turns weak and faces threats from all sides.
The plot centers around Fireheart and Graystripe, newly promoted warriors of ThunderClan, which is one of the four groups of feral cats living in the wilderness. Fireheart learns that his best friend Graystripe has fallen in love with Silverstream, a warrior from RiverClan, even though it is against the cats' "warrior code".
Cats from all the Clans swarm him with greetings and questions, but Graystripe seems hurt that Firestar and the rest of the Clan left him. Pain is shown in Firestar's eyes, and he says that he had to leave to save the Clan.
