An air/fuel heater uses warm compressor bleed air to heat the fuel. An oil/fuel exchanger heats the fuel with hot engine oil. This latter type is often referred to as a fuel-cooled oil cooler (FCOC).
The Fuel Cooled Oil Cooler (FCOC) / Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger (FOHE) exchanges heat between the engine oil and fuel streams. Heat is exchanged in such a manner that the engine oil is cooled whilst the fuel is heated up. The reason for cooling of the oil is reasonably self explanatory.
The most common type employed is the indirect-contact heat exchanger. In direct-contact exchangers, heat transfer between fluids occurs through direct interaction, ideally without mixing or leakage. The fluids come into direct contact, exchange heat, and are then separated.
1 Ιαν 2022 · The A380 makes use of an air-hydraulic heat exchanger with a dual matrix and a back-up fuel-hydraulic heat exchanger, located on the return line, upstream of the reservoir. The A350 hydraulic thermal management is more sophisticated, as provision is made for both fluid heating and cooling.
26 Απρ 2017 · Heat exchangers are crucial in thermal science and engineering because of their essential role across the landscape of technology, from geothermal and fossil power generation to refrigeration, desalination, and air conditioning.
1 Ιουν 2019 · Fuel icing threat can be managed by utilizing thermal energy in the FOHE. A practical and robust method must be devised to prevent FOHE restriction by fuel icing while maintaining the current fuel/oil heat exchange system. In this study, we propose a novel de-icing method via a fuel flow direction switching device for fuel/oil heat exchange ...
25 Ιουν 2018 · This study compares the performance of conventionally-built plate-fin air–liquid crossflow heat exchangers (i.e., aircraft oil coolers) to additively manufactured heat exchangers of similar geometry.
