Waterfronts should celebrate water by offering a diversity of cultural, commercial and housing uses. Those that require access to water should have priority. Housing neighborhoods should be mixed both functionally and socially. Waterfronts should be both physically and visually accessible for locals and tourists of all ages and income.
To understand the various approaches, examples from European regenera-tion projects for port territories in Bilbao, Barcelona, and Oslo are presented, and their experience with various geographical and town-planning conditions is highlighted. First, this paper is dedicated to the relationship of waterfront, city and sustainability. Then criteria are developed, which are crucial for a sustainable urban development at the waterfront. These criteria are clarified by examples of planning practice.
