Define amplitude, frequency, period, wavelength, and velocity of a wave; Relate wave frequency, period, wavelength, and velocity; Solve problems involving wave properties
An oscilloscope is a useful tool for anyone working with electrical signals because it provides a visual representation of the signal's shape, or waveform. This allows you to measure properties of the wave, such as amplitude or frequency. The initial signal above is a 200Hz sine wave, which has an amplitude of 5 volts.
Visualisation, analysis, and annotation of music audio recordings. Sonic Visualiser is a free, open-source application for Windows, Linux, and Mac, designed to be the first program you reach for when want to study a music recording closely.
The spectrum analyzer above gives us a graph of all the frequencies that are present in a sound recording at a given time. The resulting graph is known as a spectrogram. The darker areas are those where the frequencies have very low intensities, and the orange and yellow areas represent frequencies that have high intensities in the sound.
Full Scale. Beakers. Graph Scale. Soft. Loud. Welcome to the Spectrogram! You can draw on the screen to make sound! To allow microphone use, click or tap the microphone button on the top left corner.
A wave’s crest is its highest point, and its trough is its lowest point. A wave’s amplitude is the maximum distance (positive or negative) a wave reaches from its rest position. Wavelength is the distance between the same spot on two sections of a wave.
The Anatomy of a Wave Video Tutorial explains the meaning of wavelength and amplitude, discusses how to count the number of waves in a diagram of a wave pattern, and describes how to calculate the wavelength and the amplitude from a diagram.
