Define amplitude, frequency, period, wavelength, and velocity of a wave; Relate wave frequency, period, wavelength, and velocity; Solve problems involving wave properties
What do we mean when we say something is a wave? A wave is a disturbance that travels or propagates from the place where it was created. Waves transfer energy from one place to another, but they do not necessarily transfer any mass. Light, sound, and waves in the ocean are common examples of waves.
A wave’s amplitude is the maximum distance (positive or negative) a wave reaches from its rest position. Wavelength is the distance between the same spot on two sections of a wave. A wave’s frequency can be measured by how many crests (or how many troughs) pass a location in a certain amount of time.
11 Ιαν 2023 · In Figure 8.1.5 the equilibrium position is at y=0 cm, and the amplitude is 2 cm. Compared to a wave pulse, a repeating wave has two new parameters. The first is the wavelength, λ λ, which tells us the shortest distance (along the direction of wave motion) between identical parts of the wave.
The amplitude of a wave refers to the maximum amount of displacement of a particle on the medium from its rest position. In a sense, the amplitude is the distance from rest to crest. Similarly, the amplitude can be measured from the rest position to the trough position.
Topic 3: Waves Amplitude: A wave’s maximum displacement from its equilibrium position. Antinode: A position of maximum displacement in a stationary wave. Cladding: A protective layer on an optical fibre to improve the tensile s trength of the fibre, prevent scratching and to prevent signal transfer between adjacent fibres.
11 Ιαν 2024 · amplitude – The maximum displacement of an harmonic wave depends upon how much the driver displaces the medium at the source of the wave. We also found that the amplitude can change (get smaller) when the wave is radiating outward from a point source in 2 or 3 dimensions.
