Founded in 2002 by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman, the PhET Interactive Simulations project at the University of Colorado Boulder creates free interactive math and science simulations. PhET sims are based on extensive education <a {{0}}>research</a> and engage students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery.
Explore bending of light between two media with different indices of refraction. See how changing from air to water to glass changes the bending angle. Play with prisms of different shapes and make rainbows.
Play with light refraction through various materials in our interactive refraction simulation.
29 Ιουλ 2024 · Snell's law, or the law of refraction, describes the relationship between the angles of incidence θ₁ and refraction θ₂ and the refractive indices (n₁, n₂) of two media: n₁sin(θ₁) = n₂sin(θ₂). The law of refraction allows us to predict the amount of bend when light travels from one medium to another.
This is a simple simulation showing the reflection and refraction of a ray of light as it attempts to move from one medium to another. Use the sliders to adjust the index of refraction of each of the two materials, as well as the angle of incidence (the angle between the incident ray of light and the normal to the surface).
In the following two examples, use Snell's law, the sine button on your calculator, a protractor, and the index of refraction values to complete the following diagrams. Measure , calculate , and draw in the refracted ray with the calculated angle of refraction.
