20 Ιαν 2024 · Energy and nutrients flow from photosynthetic green algae at the bottom to the top of the food chain: the Chinook salmon. One major factor that limits the length of food chains is energy. An average of 90% of energy is lost as heat between each trophic level due to the second law of thermodynamics.
Pyramid of Energy –shows the total amount of incoming energy ate each successive level –based on the idea that 90% of the energy is lost as heat at each trophic level and only 10% of the energy is passed on.
An example of gross primary productivity is shown in the compartment diagram of energy flow within the Silver Springs aquatic ecosystem as shown (Figure 37.8). In this ecosystem, the total energy accumulated by the primary producers (gross primary productivity) was shown to be 20,810 kcal/m 2 /yr.
