Wayne National Forest trails are open to foot travel year-round. Trails seasonally close to mountain bike, equestrian and off-highway vehicle use from winter to early spring. The seasonal closing and opening dates are based on trail conditions and change year-to-year.
The 80-mile-long river winds through the beautiful Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest along steep banks and lowland forests, surrounded by white, red and jack pines as well as spruce, aspen, balsam and white birch, with only a few private homes along the way.
Water trails provide access points, resting places and attractions for watercraft users on lakes and rivers. In Wisconsin, some trails are interpretive routes, some take paddlers to campsites, and some connect communities.
There are three canoeable rivers on the Wayne National Forest; the Little Muskingum River on the Marietta unit, the Hocking River on the Athens unit, and Symmes Creek on the Ironton District. All three have access points on public land and provide a tranquil float, ideal for family canoeing.
The National Forest Service maintains several, primitive canoe/kayaking campsites in segments P1, P2 and P3 in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Segment P1 features a small, three-site campground at Big Joe Landing.
It flows out of Turtle Lake, south of Whitewater and close to the very attractive Ice Age Trail segments in the Kettle Moraine South (close to, but no cigar). From its source, the creek is entirely channelized for 8 miles and change to Comus Lake.
