An activity which helps students plan and structure paragraphs so they develop ideas more clearly and coherently. The session can be used for IELTS preparation or for more general academic writing skills.
In Writing Part 1, you need to show that you can use language appropriately to do things such as: • Agreeing or disagreeing • Giving opinions • Giving information or explanations • Giving reasons • Giving examples • Comparing and contrasting ideas and opinions • Drawing conclusions
Use sample and model answers from ielts.org and takeielts.org to give students further example questions and the topic sentences for the body paragraphs for them to write the rest of the paragraph using developing and re-stating / rounding off sentences.
• before handing out Worksheet 2, elicit a possible essay structure. • give each student a copy of Worksheet 2. • draw attention to the 2 different essay outlines and exercise 1.
give each student a copy of Worksheet 1 and one minute to read the Task 2 question. elicit possible next steps before writing i.e. brainstorming ideas. draw attention to the True / False task and clarify the importance of spending time with the question before rushing into an answer.
The sample paragraphs in this section illustrate topic sentences, supporting details, organizational patterns, and signal words in context. Read each paragraph to identify the type of paragraph organization on your own, and then proceed to the analysis to check your comprehension.
A composition where you discuss a topic (discursive writing) may involve discussing the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions. The structure needs to be very clear.
