Peripheral neuropathy happens when the nerves that are located outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves) are damaged. This condition often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in the hands and feet. It also can affect other areas and body functions including digestion and urination.
Some common symptoms include difficulty gripping objects, dropping objects, decreased hand strength, and a general feeling of weakness or fatigue in the hands. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and may worsen over time if left untreated.
Symptoms and Signs. Tingling: Often described as a “pins and needles” sensation. Pain: Can range from mild discomfort to severe, sometimes hindering daily activities. Numbness: A lack of feeling that may affect parts of the hand or the entire hand.
Weakness is loss of muscle strength, although many patients also use the term when they feel generally fatigued or have functional limitations (eg, due to pain or limited joint motion) even though muscle strength is normal. Weakness may affect a few or many muscles and develop suddenly or gradually.
