In the following discussion, “the Wernicke area” refers to the anatomical site now labeled the Wernicke area, specifically the pSTG (posterior portion of Brodmann area 22) and the SMG (Brodmann area 40). THE WERNICKE AREA IS CRITICAL FOR SPEECH PRODUCTION.
Our nervous system has two dedicated areas that allow us to communicate. The production of speech takes place in Broca’s area located in the frontal lobe. However, the interpretation of speech happens elsewhere. Wernicke’s area – located in the temporal lobe – processes what is being spoken.

Wernicke Area* / anatomy & histology. The Wernicke area, also known as Brodmann area 22, is located in the posterior segment of the superior temporal gyrus in the dominant hemisphere. Carl Wernicke, a German neurologist, described this area in 1874.
