In 1923, 100 years ago, our YMCA opened the first west side Y just steps from this location to support displaced Tulsans after the flooding of the Arkansas River. It continued to serve the community, providing meals, showers, and a gathering space for those working in the oil fields.
Through the comprehensive Pre-Reconnaissance study, a number of opportunities associated with the Arkansas River and Arkansas River Corridor were identified, including low water dams, mixed-use areas, parks, fishing piers, boating access, new and expanded trails, and bridges.

The new Zink Dam also greatly improves water flow along the Arkansas River when compared to the old dam – another reason for improved water quality. The old dam had only three 50-foot gates, which comprised about 12.5 percent of the width of the river.
