20 Ιουν 2023 · Whales inhabit the depths of the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Indian Ocean, as well as the icy expanses of the Arctic and Antarctic. Whales also live in seas like the Mediterranean and North Sea. They traverse long distances annually in search of food, mates, and even safety.
Whales are a widely distributed and diverse group of fully aquatic placental marine mammals. As an informal and colloquial grouping, they correspond to large members of the infraorder Cetacea, i.e. all cetaceans apart from dolphins and porpoises. Dolphins and porpoises may be considered whales from a formal, cladistic perspective.
The species most commonly sighted around the UK coast are bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises. There are populations of bottlenose dolphins in Cardigan Bay in Wales and the Moray Firth in Scotland, but smaller groups or individuals may be seen almost anywhere.
