Introduction: The Idea of a Science of Belief Systems. 1. Even in an era of filigree-like academic specialization, the study of belief systems has not yet succeeded in winning recognition as an independent area of knowledge. Perhaps there is no need for it.
This study investigates the complex interplay between art and religion within African cultures. By examining various art forms, including sculptures, masks, paintings, and textiles, this study explores how these artistic expressions have been used to convey religious beliefs and spiritual experiences.
In section Mimetic Arts, I explore the power of the arts to compel belief fixation through emotional states of immanence using examples from tragic drama, cinema, the sublime in visual art, and the use of music to engender trance states.
