What are the effects of climate change on extreme weather? Research says all the risks from these extreme weather events will escalate the more the planet warms. However, IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report also describes some climate change mitigation strategies, technological developments, and methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Building on the SREX report and AR5, this Report defines an extreme weather event as ‘an event that is rare at a particular place and time of year’, and an extreme climate event as ‘a pattern of extreme weather that persists for some time, such as a season’ (see Glossary).
Polar ice shields are melting and the sea is rising. In some regions, extreme weather events and rainfall are becoming more common while others are experiencing more extreme heat waves and droughts. We need climate action now, or these impacts will only intensify.
