12 Σεπ 2023 · Sound waves fill our world, from music to spoken words to the rustling of leaves in the wind. In this post, we’ll explore what sound waves are, their characteristics like amplitude and frequency, and review the speed of sound.
Sound is a longitudinal wave, which means the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave. A sound wave coming out of a musical instrument, loudspeaker, or someone's mouth pushes the air forward and backward as the sound propagates outward.
Sound is the vibration of air particles, which travels to your ears from the vibration of the object making the sound. These vibrations of sound in the air are called sound waves. When a door is slammed, the door vibrates, sending sound waves through the air.
Vector spaces are natural structures in which to view sounds waves as superimposed simple elements, and in this framework, we can formalize some important questions: What are the sound waves that can be expressed as superpositions of sinusoids? How well can we approximate a sound wave as such a superposition?
5 Δεκ 2019 · Sound waves are vibrations in a medium, which can be perceived by the human ear. The frequency of a sound wave is the number of vibrations per second, measured in Hertz. Humans create music by vibrating the air column in their throats. Musical sound can also be created by musical instruments.
Musical notes, like all sounds, are made of sound waves. The sound waves that make musical notes are very evenly-spaced waves, and the qualities of these regular waves - for example how big they are or how far apart they are - affect the sound of the note.
