Electrons are tiny, negatively charged particles in an atom that move around the positive nucleus at the center. Energy levels are a little like the steps of a staircase.

The energy of the electrons in the subshells increases in the order s < p < d. The order of subshells overlap for the higher principal quantum shells as seen in the diagram below:
Each shell has a different energy level, increasing the further it is from the nucleus. Each energy level is given a number called the principal quantum number, n. The closest shell has a value of n=1. The next shell has a value of n=2, etc.
