Overview. What is laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR)? Laryngopharyngeal (“la-Ring-go-fa-Rin-jee-al”) reflux, or LPR, is a special type of acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when stomach juices (including acid) rise from your stomach into your esophagus (swallowing tube). Symptoms of acid reflux usually affect your lower esophagus, within your chest.
Why Is LPR Often Called Silent Reflux? Causes of LPR. Throat symptoms can have multiple causes and it can be difficult to identify their exact cause. For instance throat clearing can be caused by reflux, a post-nasal drip secondary to allergies or sinusitis, vocal cord abnormalities, medications and can even be habitual.
