On a typical week, the Torah is read publicly on Monday, Thursday, and twice on Shabbat. On holidays, fast days, and Rosh Chodesh, the Torah is read regardless of the day of the week. When did this start? Moses instituted that the Torah be read three days a week.

Each week in synagogue, we read (or, more accurately, chant, because it is sung) a passage from the Torah. This passage is referred to as a parshah. The first parshah, for example, is Parashat Bereishit, which covers from the beginning of Genesis to the story of Noah.

We read and study a given Torah portion before it will be recited during Shabbat morning services. Note that in addition to the Saturday morning reading, the beginning of the following week's portion is chanted during the Saturday afternoon service and during Monday and Thursday morning services.
A small taste of the week's Torah reading is read during morning services on Monday and Thursday. But the big deal is on the last day of the week, Shabbat, when the Torah and haftarah readings are the centerpiece of the morning service.
