Bifocals are eyeglasses with an upper and lower half, the upper for distance, and the lower for reading. Bifocals are commonly prescribed to people with presbyopia, a condition that Franklin suffered.
Benjamin Franklin is generally credited with the invention of bifocals. He decided to saw his lenses in half so he could read the lips of speakers of French at court, the only way he could understand them. [1]

Benjamin Franklin is credited with the invention of bifocal glasses, which he sketched here for his friend George Whatley, a London merchant and pamphleteer.
He dubbed the glasses “double spectacles,” though we now know them as bifocals. Like his other inventions, Franklin had little interest in profiting from his creation, instead preferring to share it with the community to help improve quality of life for others suffering from vision deterioration.
