Verizon pulls a Fiber Optic cable (consisting of Glass, and maybe some Plastic and metal armor) into your unit or home. That fiber cable connections up to a device called an ONT, which is acts as your "ISP Demarc" or, the place where your router connects to. It's like a modem, but it's not.
