A child of a deaf adult, often known as CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult), is a person who was raised by a deaf parent or guardian. Many CODAs identify with both deaf and hearing cultures. Over 90% of Deaf adults have hearing children.

This research is focused on the identity positions and interpreting experiences of the hearing children of deaf adults, otherwise known as CODAs. It explores the interaction between themes of hearing and deaf identities as embodied and socially.
Our project tracks the development of American Sign Language (ASL) or Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) by young children growing up in deaf signing families. Because these children can hear, they also simultaneously learn English, the majority spoken language.
Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) are uniquely positioned at the intersection between Deaf and hearing communities and often act as interpreters for their parents and hearing individuals.
