In arithmetic and algebra, the cube of a number n is its third power, that is, the result of multiplying three instances of n together. The cube of a number or any other mathematical expression is denoted by a superscript 3, for example 23 = 8 or (x + 1)3. The cube is also the number multiplied by its square:
Cubed. When a value is followed by the term "cubed," it means that the value is being raised to the power of three. For example, three cubed is written as follows: In the above figure, "cubed" refers to the exponent, 3.
Exponents. The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. In 82 the "2" says to use 8 twice in a multiplication, so 82 = 8 × 8 = 64. In words: 8 2 could be called "8 to the power 2" or "8 to the second power", or simply "8 squared".
Welcome to How to Cube a Number with Mr. J! Need help with exponents and what cubing a number means?
What is a cubed number? A “number cubed” refers to the multiplication of the number with itself and again by itself, i.e., multiplication of the same number two times. In other words, we can find the cube of a number by multiplying the square of a number by the number itself.
Similar to the square, the cube of a number is the volume of the cube with sides equal to that number--this will come in handy in higher levels of math. Exponents The "2" in "5 2" and the "3" in "5 3" are called exponents. An exponent indicates the number of times we must multiply the base number.
The Cube Root Symbol This is the special symbol that means "cube root", it is the "radical" symbol (used for square roots) with a little three to mean cube root. You can use it like this:
