Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is named for its ability to stimulate follicle growth in females, as depicted in Fig. 1. Follicle-stimulating hormone stimulates the division and function of granulosa cells that surround and nurture the developing oocyte (egg) in the follicle.
1 Αυγ 2008 · The continued release of FSH and the increase in release of LH causes ovulation to occur to within 24 to 72 hours of the luteinizing hormone peak. The LH surge or peak occurs within 24 hours of the beginning of estrus.
6 Σεπ 2024 · FSH is a key fertility hormone for men and women. FSH levels in women fluctuate based on the stage of the menstrual cycle. They rise during the follicular phase and ovulation and drop during the luteal phase. FSH levels increase with age as the egg reserve depletes naturally.
FSH is elevated late in anestrus, but follicles may actually be selected for the next cycle at this time. This is really not known very well. Inhibin may inhibit FSH, but it has not been documented in the bitch.
Estrous (Heat) Cycle in Female Dogs. Proestrus—Start of heat. Lasts 7 to 10 days. Vulva swells and blood flows. Females attract males but will not allow mounting. Estrus—Mating period. Lasts 5 to 10 days. Blood flow lessens and then stops. Females attract and accept males.
