Prison Industries (PI) is a team of prisoners in Fox River who do jobs around the prison that the prison itself does not have the resources to fix. According to Michael, the starting pay is 19 cents an hour. Jobs include painting, cleaning and repairing damaged rooms.

I assume John having PI means he can take the brunt of his prison gang off the yard and into PI and they also have access to alot of restricted materials and especially tools and weapons which would be very helpful to a prison gang wanting to live lavishly and keep control.
How did Linc get on PI? I just started rewatching season 1. When Michael first gets into Fox River there's a big point made how dangerous Linc is. He's kept in his own area at yard time and no one is allowed to even go near his fence.
