As a Principal Investigator (PI), you are vital to the overall safety culture of your laboratory, and only you can set the tone, create the expectations, determine the standards, and build an environment where your students, postdoctoral scholars, and research staff can reach their full potential.
Follow oral and written laboratory safety rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) required for the tasks assigned. Keep work areas safe and uncluttered. Review and understand chemical hazards and hazards of laboratory procedures prior to conducting work.
As a PI, you are responsible for the workplace safety of laboratory personnel and for the requirements outlined in this guide. Laboratory personnel includes faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students (paid and unpaid), and non-UW employees conducting research activities on your behalf, which may occur inside or outside the laboratory.
Each PI has a regulatory obligation to develop a written plan that describes how they will protect lab workers from health hazards associated with their assigned duties. Once developed, this plan must be implemented and all work must be done in accordance with the plan’s specifications.
The Principal Investigator’s (PI) is ultimately responsible for everything that goes on in their lab.
