The seal of the state of Hawaii hangs from the mauka and makai entrances to the state capitol, and is patterned after the royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii. From the March/April 1979 issue of Aloha Magazine*, the symbolism of the seal is described: 1959 represents the date of statehood.
The motto “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono” (“The Life of the Land Is Perpetuated in Righteousness”) is along the bottom edge. Below the shield are various symbols: a phoenix rising from flames, taro leaves, banana foliage, and maidenhair ferns.
