At first Germany used floating aircraft called zeppelins, rather than airplanes, to bomb the United Kingdom. Then the British built antiaircraft guns to shoot down the zeppelins. During the war both sides built several kinds of warplanes. Fighter airplanes had machine guns to shoot at other airplanes.

Over 9 million military personnel and 13 million civilians died in the destruction caused by World War I. It was the first time machines were used on a large scale in military operations. This war also saw the use of navy and airforce as independent military operations.
The Time Traveller produces a miniature time machine and makes it disappear into thin air. The next week, the guests return, to find their host stumble in, looking disheveled and tired. They sit down after dinner, and the Time Traveller begins his story.
During the Somme offensive the British introduced an armored vehicle that ran on endless metal chains. The machine had been developed secretly, with different parts made in different factories. Some parts, which looked like they could be used to make containers for liquids, were called tanks by the workers.
The Time Machine was the first novel by English author H.G. Wells. It was published in book form in 1895. The Time Machine is considered one of the earliest works of science fiction and of the “time travel” subgenre. It was made into a movie of the same name in 1960 (see The Time Machine).
