It was the first time in history that Britain had come under threat from the sky. Gigantic German airships, known as Zeppelins (below), carried out 52 bombing raids on Britain during the war – killing more than 500. People were terrified of them!
At first Germany used floating aircraft called zeppelins, rather than airplanes, to bomb the United Kingdom. Then the British built antiaircraft guns to shoot down the zeppelins. During the war both sides built several kinds of warplanes. Fighter airplanes had machine guns to shoot at other airplanes.
Over 9 million military personnel and 13 million civilians died in the destruction caused by World War I. It was the first time machines were used on a large scale in military operations. This war also saw the use of navy and airforce as independent military operations.
When the machine stops, in the year 802,701 AD, he finds himself in a paradisiacal world of small humanoid creatures called Eloi. They are frail and peaceful, and give him fruit to eat. He explores the area, but when he returns he finds that his time machine is gone.

The Time Machine was the first novel by English author H.G. Wells. It was published in book form in 1895. The Time Machine is considered one of the earliest works of science fiction and of the “time travel” subgenre. It was made into a movie of the same name in 1960 (see The Time Machine).
