Lactose intolerance is an inability to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products. Lactose intolerance occurs when you don’t produce enough of the enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose.
Other dairy products made from milk, such as butter, ice cream and cheese, can also contain high levels of lactose and may need to be avoided if you’re lactose intolerant. Some dairy products however, such as hard cheese and yoghurt, contain lower levels of lactose than milk and other products, so you may still be able to have them.
The most common cause of lactose intolerance is when the body does not make enough of an enzyme called lactase, which helps you digest lactose. Lactose intolerance can start at any age and can also be caused by: conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and Coeliac disease; bowel infections; bowel surgery; an injury to the bowel
