I use an iPad for a lot at work and knew you previously could use a CAC reader by paying $150 for a special one and downloading custom software from either Thurbsy (Identiv now) or TwoCanoes, but now you can use any USB-C or lighting reader on iPad and iPhone.

11 Μαΐ 2020 · Unless you are able to identify a reader designed for use with iPad/iPhone - that explicitly carries the Apple “Made for iPad/iPhone” and has a corresponding App that provides support - you’re not going to be able to connect a CAC reader.

I use a USB C CAC Reader with my iPad Pro 2022 without any additional software in order to access CAC enabled sites including outlook. Plenty on Amazon, be sure to purchase one that is made on the approved list (FIPS 201); aka not made in China.
