A bone density scan checks the density of your bones. If your bone density is low, you have a higher risk of a bone fracture. This scan may also be called a bone mineral density scan (BMD scan) or a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scan (DXA or DEXA scan).
Bone density tests differ from bone scans. Bone scans require an injection beforehand and are usually used to detect fractures, cancer, infections and other abnormalities in the bone. Although osteoporosis is more common in older women, men also can develop the condition.
Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DXA is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD). An x-ray exam helps doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions.
