A dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan (DEXA), or bone density scan, is a special type of x-ray that measures bone mineral density (BMD). It provides information about bone strength or fragility and the risk of fractures or broken bones.
The procedure is quick, painless, and typically takes about 10 to 20 minutes to complete. The DEXA machine emits low-dose X-rays, which bone and soft tissue absorb differently, allowing for precise measurements of bone density.

Bone density tests differ from bone scans. Bone scans require an injection beforehand and are usually used to detect fractures, cancer, infections and other abnormalities in the bone. Although osteoporosis is more common in older women, men also can develop the condition.
DXA is a non-invasive test to measure bone density. A bone density test is a measurement of how much mineral, such as calcium, you have in your bones. The most common and most versatile test is with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
Bone densitometry, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, DEXA or DXA, uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body (usually the lower (or lumbar) spine and hips) to measure bone loss.
