Physical Description and Adaptations. Common warthogs have a large head and barrel-shaped, sturdy body. Adults tend to have darker gray or black skin. Both males and females have two sets of tusks, an upper and a lower. The upper set can grow up to 10 inches long, with the females' being slightly smaller.
An average group of warthogs consists of a mother and her new young and possibly two other sows with older young. Females usually have good bonds and can stay together for multiple breeding cycles. Sub-adult males can form bachelor groups but leave these as they reach adulthood (over four years).
