9 Οκτ 2024 · Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a type of sex hormone that works alongside luteinizing hormone (LH) to regulate key reproductive processes in both women and men. In women, FSH helps to stimulate the development of ovarian follicles, which eventually go on to release an egg during ovulation.
Specifically, activation of Sertoli cells by FSH sustains spermatogenesis and stimulates inhibin B secretion. In females, FSH initiates follicular growth, specifically affecting granulosa cells. With the concomitant rise in inhibin B, FSH levels then decline in the late follicular phase.
Follicle stimulating hormone is produced by the pituitary gland. It regulates the functions of both the ovaries and testes. Lack or low levels of it can cause subfertility in both men and women.
In female mammals, FSH stimulates ovarian follicle growth and maturation, as well as E 2 synthesis by granulosa cells, whereas LH stimulates androgen production by theca cells and ovulation of the dominant follicle(s). The necessity for FSH in female reproduction is clearly demonstrated both clinically and in animal models.
