Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), plays a pivotal role in both the female and male reproductive systems. Produced by the pituitary gland in the brain, FSH stimulates testicular growth. It also helps produce a protein that aids in creating normal sperm cells.
In men, the production of follicle stimulating hormone is regulated by circulating levels of inhibin. If spermatogenesis is impaired, this will lead to less inhibin being produced by the testes. The usual action of inhibin is to inhibit FSH release from the pituitary gland.
23 Ιαν 2023 · In boys or children assigned male at birth (AMAB), FSH and LH work together to trigger their testes to begin producing testosterone. This is the hormone responsible for the physical changes of puberty (such as body hair growth and voice deepening) and the production of sperm.
1 Μαΐ 2023 · Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary in response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. FSH plays a role in sexual development and reproduction in both males and females.
In males, FSH induces Sertoli cells to secrete androgen-binding proteins (ABPs), regulated by inhibin's negative feedback mechanism on the anterior pituitary. Specifically, activation of Sertoli cells by FSH sustains spermatogenesis and stimulates inhibin B secretion.
The gonadotropins FSH and LH are synthesized and secreted by gonadotrope cells of the anterior pituitary gland. Both hormones are noncovalently linked dimeric glycoproteins consisting of a common α-subunit (chorionic gonadotropin alpha [CGA]) and unique β-subunits (FSH-β and LH-β). The latter confer biologic specificity to the two ligands.
17 Ιαν 2023 · FSH: Follicle-stimulating hormone stimulates both the production of androgen-binding protein by Sertoli cells and the formation of the blood-testis barrier. Hormonal control of spermatogenesis varies among species.
